General Submission Guidelines
Shaved Ice Collective accepts simultaneous submissions, but please notify us if a piece has been accepted elsewhere by leaving a note in DuoTrope and withdrawing the accepted piece promptly. If you submitted multiple pieces and only one piece has been accepted, please leave a note about which piece is no longer available for consideration. We only take submissions through DuoTrope, and do not take unsolicited email submissions.
We accept pdf, docx, and doc only. All pieces must be in MLA format (12 point, double spaced, serial fonts), unless breaking these conventions is necessary for the work.

There is no submission fee to send your work to us. We don't pay authors, though we hope to in the future. We are also only an online publication for now, though we hope to also expand to print in the future. You can expect to hear back from us within six months, and if not, you can send an email to check the status of your submission.
All work must be previously unpublished. This means if your work has appeared in any print or online source (this includes personal blogs, websites, and social media pages), we cannot accept it. You can submit to multiple genres (poetry, fiction, nonfiction, transient), but you can only submit to each genre once during a given submission period.
All submissions must be your original work, with no use of generative AI in any stage of the writing process, which includes but is not limited to brainstorming, outlining, drafting, and revising. If it is discovered that any part of your piece involved the use of generative AI, your submission will be rejected, and you will not be allowed to submit to Shaved Ice Collective in the future.

Your cover letter should contain a 50- to 100-word bio and the word count of your piece. Do not try to explain what your piece is about; it should stand on its own. By publishing with Shaved Ice Collective, you grant us First Serial Rights and agree to acknowledge us as the publication in which your piece first appeared. All rights revert back to you immediately following publication.
If your piece(s) are rejected, you may submit to a future open submission period as soon as you would like. If your piece(s) are accepted, please wait three issues before submitting again. No racist, sexist, ableist, etc. pieces will be tolerated. If such pieces are submitted, SIC will not consider those pieces and any pieces you submit in the future.
Fiction Submission Guidelines
If submitting a short story:
Length: 6,000 words max
Please submit only one short story in a single document. Anything shorter than 1,000 words should be submitted under flash fiction instead. Shaved Ice Collective will happily consider genre works, though anything that is hard genre might find a better home somewhere else.
If submitting flash fiction:
Length: 1,000 words max for each piece, 3 pieces max
Please ensure all your flash pieces are contained in a single document, with no more than three pieces submitted at a given time and with each piece beginning on a new page.

Poetry Submission Guidelines
Length: 3 poems max, 10 pages max total

Please ensure all your poems are contained in a single document, with each poem beginning on a new page. We are open to experimental forms and formats, but be aware that there are limits to what we might reasonably format on our website.

Nonfiction Submission Guidelines
Length: 6,000 words max

Please submit only one work of nonfiction in a single document. Shaved Ice Collective will happily consider anything from creative nonfiction to cultural critique, though anything with a strong journalistic focus might find a better home elsewhere.

Transient Submission Guidelines
Length: 10 pages max

Please submit only one work in a single document to the Multimedia category within DuoTrope. This is a category for works that you feel defy categorization in any traditional genre, and it is up to your discretion to what you believe that entails.
